This Privacy Policy explains what OriginAR does with your information when you use the OriginAR app or this website.
OriginAR is published by Xavier de Rosamel, a sole trader (micro-entreprise) registered in France under SIRET 993 312 966 00019. Under the General Data Protection Regulation, he is the data controller for everything described here. Full contact details are in section 8.
The short version: OriginAR has no user accounts and no servers of its own. You never tell us your name, and nothing you do inside the app is stored anywhere we can read it. What does leave your phone goes to Google, not to us: camera imagery and location, so that the reconstructions can be placed accurately on the real site, and technical data from Google's AR software. That exchange is explained in full below, because it is the part that matters most. The app works the same way on iPhone and on Android; where the two differ, this policy says so.
This section covers the app first, then the website. They are separate, and they do not share data.
The AR experience needs your camera, and your phone (iOS or Android) will ask your permission before it is used. What the camera sees is displayed live on your screen and analysed to work out where your phone is pointing. OriginAR never records, saves or transmits video or photographs.
There is one important exception, and it is not optional. To align a reconstruction with the real monument in front of you, the app uses Google's ARCore Geospatial service, which compares what your camera sees against Google's own imagery of the location. That comparison happens on Google's servers, so camera imagery and your location are sent to Google each time the app locates itself. This is the only way the reconstructions can stand where the actual buildings stood, and it is why the AR mode needs an internet connection. Google's handling of that data is governed by their policies, linked in section 3.
The app asks for precise location, and your phone (iOS or Android) will ask your permission before it is used. It serves two purposes: telling you whether you are inside the covered area, and feeding the alignment described above. Your location is used while the app is open and is not stored by OriginAR and not kept as any kind of history or trail.
Site access is sold through the in-app purchase system of the store you got the app from: Apple's In-App Purchase on iPhone, Google Play Billing on Android. The store handles the entire transaction. We never see your card details, your billing address, your Apple Account or your Google account. What reaches the app is a receipt confirming that a given site has been unlocked, which is stored on your device so the content stays available. Promo codes are redeemed in Apple's own code sheet or on Google Play's redeem page, so they too never pass through us.
The app keeps a small amount of data locally: which sites you have unlocked, your language choice, technical settings needed to render the scene correctly, and a technical log of the app's memory use. This lives on your phone, is not readable by us, and is deleted when you delete the app.
The augmented reality mode runs on Google's ARCore software, which sends Google technical diagnostics about how it is running, such as whether a session started and how stable the tracking was. On iPhone, these diagnostics are anonymous, not linked to you or to your Apple Account and not used to track you.
On Android, ARCore runs as Google Play Services for AR, a component installed by Google. For its own analytics, Google states that it collects the identifier of the Google account signed in on the phone (or a device identifier if there is none), performance diagnostics such as frame rate and loading time, and which ARCore features the app uses. Google states that it does not share this data with third parties. In both cases, OriginAR never receives any of it.
OriginAR itself does not measure how you use the app: there is no usage analytics, no advertising identifier and no tracking.
If you send a message through the contact form, we receive what you type: your name, your email address, your message, and the organisation and website fields if you fill them in. That is the only way this site collects anything about you by itself.
The site also uses Google Analytics, and only after you accept it in the banner shown on your first visit. Declining leaves the site fully functional. You can change your mind at any time through the "Cookie settings" link in the footer, and declining after having accepted deletes the cookies that were set.
Each of the things described above serves one purpose and is not reused for another:
We do not sell your data, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not build profiles of individual users. OriginAR makes money when someone buys access to a site, and that is the only way it makes money.
OriginAR runs on services operated by other companies. These are all of them.
Google and Netlify are established in the United States, so some of this data is transferred outside the European Union. Those transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Under the GDPR you may ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how it is used, or send it to another provider. You may also withdraw a consent you gave earlier, which takes effect from that moment and does not undo what was lawfully done before.
In practice, the app holds nothing that identifies you, so for most requests there is nothing on our side to retrieve. Two of these rights are immediate and in your own hands: deleting the app erases everything it stored, and declining analytics in the cookie settings on this site stops that measurement at once.
For anything else, write to us through the contact form. We answer within one month. If our answer does not satisfy you, you may complain to the French data protection authority, the CNIL, at 3 Place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07.
OriginAR is suitable for all ages: it is rated 4+ on the App Store, and its Google Play rating is shown on its store page. It never asks for a name or contact details and collects nothing about the person using it, whatever their age; the camera imagery and location described in section 1 go to Google only while the AR mode is running. If you believe we hold information about a child, for example through the contact form, contact us and we will delete it.
French law sets the age of valid consent for data processing at 15. If you are under 15 and in France, a parent or guardian must agree before you accept analytics on this website. Declining leaves the site fully usable.
This policy will change as the app does, most obviously when new sites are added. The date at the top of the page always reflects the current version. If a change affects you materially, for example if we began collecting something new, we will say so in the app rather than relying on you to notice a new date here.
